So, you finally invested in a sit-stand desk—great move! But now, weeks (or months) later, you’re realising… you’re still sitting most of the day.
You’re not alone.
Many people find themselves in the same situation: the desk is there, the option to stand is available, but the habit just hasn’t clicked. The good news? With a few simple tweaks, you can turn your sit-stand desk from an unused feature into your secret weapon for better posture, energy, and focus.
Here are 5 easy, effective ways to build the standing habit into your day:
1. Set a Reminder (and Make it Gentle!)
Let’s face it—when we’re deep in work, we forget to move. A simple timer on your phone, a recurring calendar alert, or even a smart speaker reminder every 30–60 minutes can be the nudge you need.
💡 Tip: Use language like “Time to stretch your legs?” instead of something bossy. Keep it light and encouraging.
2. Link Standing to Everyday Tasks
Building a new habit is much easier when you pair it with something you already do.
Start standing for tasks like:
- Phone or video calls (my own personal favourite!)
- Checking emails
- Virtual meetings
- Reviewing documents
Before long, it’ll feel automatic.
3. Stick Up a Visual Cue
Sometimes it’s not forgetfulness—it’s just out of sight, out of mind. Try placing a sticky note on your screen, a bright sticker on your desk, or even a custom screensaver that says “Time to stand?”
It’s amazing what a tiny visual prompt can do.
4. Start Small, Build Gradually
Don’t feel pressure to stand for hours straight. That’s not the goal! Aim to stand for 15 minutes every hour, or alternate sitting and standing every 45–60 minutes.
The real win here is movement variation, not standing all day
5. Give Yourself Credit
If you stood for one meeting today—that’s progress. It takes time to form a new routine, especially when the old one (sitting all day) is so deeply ingrained.
Be patient, be kind to yourself, and know that each small effort adds up over time.
Your sit-stand desk isn’t a wasted investment—it’s a tool. And like any tool, it takes a bit of practice and consistency to get the most out of it.
