I have been asked recently if trackball mouse devices are any better for computer based workers compared to the standard mouse device so have decided to text a couple for a few weeks and share the experience.
Trackball mouse devices are purported to be more accurate than the traditional mouse, reduce upper limb discomfort due to reduced movement and be ideal for work surfaces with limited surface area.
First up is the Logi M575S wireless trackball mouse (right hand).
This trackball mouse has two click buttons and a scroll wheel, similar to a traditional mouse, but the cursor is navigated on screen by moving the trackball with the thumb.
Design
The M575S is currently for right handed users only, measures 130mm x 48mm, a left and right click button either side of a scroll wheel and secondary forward and back buttons beside the left click button.
The grippy rubber feet under the mouse keep it in place on the work surface.
Connectivity and Battery Life
The device connects wirelessly through either Bluetooth or a RF USB receiver, making it compatible with a range of devices.
It runs on a single AA battery, which Logitech estimates can last up to 18 months depending on usage.
Customisation Options
Using the Logitech Options software, the M575S allows users to adjust cursor speed and customize button functions. These features could help streamline workflows, particularly for tasks that require precision or frequent shortcuts.
As I am happy with the out of the box settings I have not needed to make any adjustments.
Sustainability Features
Logitech has incorporated post-consumer recycled plastic into the M575S, with 52% used in the Graphite version (the version I purchased) and 21% in the Off-White version. The packaging is also made from responsibly sourced materials, reflecting a commitment to sustainability.
My User Experience
Coming off regular use of a vertical mouse, I fully expected to not enjoy using this mouse. I was concerned about overuse of the muscles that control the thumb, which are primarily used for gripping and not repetitive movements (although the mobile phone keyboard may have increased our tolerance for repetitive thumb movements!)
It turned out to be quite an easy adjustment for me. I find the ideal placement of the mouse on my surface and that is where the mouse stays. I keep it in easy reach, close to my keyboard to ensure my shoulder is relaxed and my arm is supported on the surface. There is no contact stress on my wrist and not temptation to anchor my hand and deviate the wrist to navigate the cursor.
I have no issue navigating with the trackball, rolling the scroll wheel, clicking the buttons, or clicking and dragging windows.
However, I am having issues with selecting text on documents that I want to highlight. My finger slips and I end up losing what I have highlighted, or highlighting everything! Ideally, I would like the entire device to be a little bit smaller to fit better into my hand. I do find this with a lot of ergonomic mouse devices, they are not made for hands my size (170mm from top of middle finger to base palm).
This has not put me off thumb operated trackball though, and trialing this mouse has got me curious and searching for alternatives for small to medium hands!
Conclusion
The Logitech ERGO M575S Wireless Trackball Mouse is a practical option for computer based workers seeking an ergonomic and space-saving input device. It is a suitable alternative to the traditional mouse device and the learning curve is not as steep as I expected.
However, users should consider whether its unique design aligns with their preferences and needs.
I would be cautious recommending a thumb operated trackball mouse to a user with a history of right hand / wrist RSIs or underlying inflammatory conditions as I feel it would increase the risk of an RSI in the carpometacarpal (thumb / CMC) joint.
