Why Ergonomic Risk Doesn’t Stop at the Desk

When people hear the word ergonomics, they often think of office chairs, monitor heights and DSE assessments.

But ergonomics doesn’t begin and end at the desk.

In this episode, I explore why ergonomic risk exists anywhere people work—from warehouses and production lines to delivery vehicles, laboratories, reception desks and home offices—and why viewing ergonomics as simply a compliance exercise means organisations can miss much bigger opportunities to improve health, safety and performance.

I discuss:

    • Why ergonomic risk isn’t defined by location—it’s defined by how work is designed.
    • The difference between training people to work safely and designing work so it’s safer in the first place.
    • Why manual handling training is important—but shouldn’t be your only control measure.
    • How your existing workplace data can reveal recurring ergonomic problems before they become larger issues.
    • Why recurring DSE recommendations, injury reports and equipment requests often point to system-wide improvements rather than isolated cases.
    • How applying one consistent ergonomic approach across DSE, manual handling, driving, pregnancy, return-to-work and hybrid working leads to better outcomes for both employees and organisations.
    • Why good ergonomics is an investment in productivity, consistency and sustainable performance—not simply a health and safety cost.

If you’re responsible for Health & Safety, HR, Facilities or employee wellbeing, this episode will help you look beyond individual cases and start recognising the patterns that shape safer, healthier workplaces.
