When an employee reports discomfort, the conversation often turns straight to equipment. A new chair? A sit–stand desk? A different mouse?

Choosing a suitable solution starts with understanding what the job is asking of the person doing it.

In this episode of Ergonomically Speaking, Niamh Pentony of Boyne Ergonomics explores why effective ergonomic recommendations consider the person, task, equipment, environment and organisation together.

Through examples from office work, packing and production, driving, and return to work, we explore how an equipment request can reveal several issues—and why practical changes may involve task layout, scheduling and opportunities for movement alongside equipment.

We also discuss the connection with EU-OSHA’s “Together for mental health at work” campaign, considering how work organisation can help employees put ergonomic advice into practice.

In this episode:

    • Why an “ergonomic” label does not establish suitability.
    • How a request for a new chair can reveal issues with reach, screen layout and consecutive meetings.
    • Why the same assessment principles apply beyond the desk.
    • How workload, task variation and support affect whether adjustments are practical.
    • Five questions employers should ask before buying equipment.
    • Why employee involvement and follow-up matter.

The key takeaway: Understand the work before selecting the intervention—and review whether the changes help the person doing it.
