As an ergonomics professional, I try to evaluate various ergonomic products designed to enhance comfort and productivity in home office settings, so I can offer more informed recommendations for people I work with.

One such product that I have tried, and purchased, is the IKEA Nilserik Standing Support, a versatile solution for individuals seeking a balance between sitting and standing while working. This product was tried and purchased for use as an active seating option for my sit stand computer workstation.

Design and Construction:

The Nilserik Standing Support boasts a sleek and minimalist design, typical of IKEA’s aesthetic. Constructed with sturdy plastic, with a foam seat cushion and steel gas cylinder, it offers reliability and durability.

The product is constructed to meet the requirements of safety standard EN 16139:2013-L1 which sets the standard for safety, durability and strength of non-domestic seating furniture.

It has been tested for use by persons up to 110Kg.

The height-adjustable feature allows users to customize the support according to their preferences and workspace requirements. The Nilserik is height adjustable between 51cm and 71cm, with the height adjustment via one of three push buttons located under the seat.

The seating weighs approximately 5 Kg and I find it easy to move around, frequently bringing it from room to room to use where needed.

Ergonomic Benefits:

One of the standout features of the Nilserik Standing Support is the dual height base which encourages engagement of the core muscles to maintain seated stability, while allowing for slight adjustments in seating position, encouraging activation of different muscle groups as seated position changes.

The lack of a back support also facilitates this increased use of the core when upright.

The ease of height adjustment is a great feature, with the locations of the push buttons making it easy to adjust no matter the orientation of the seat cushion.

The height adjustment is an important feature that can sometimes be lacking in other active seating options.

Versatility and Adaptability:

Whether used at a traditional desk or a standing workstation, the Nilserik Standing Support offers flexibility to accommodate different working preferences.

Its compact size makes it suitable for small home office spaces, while the lightweight construction allows for easy maneuverability.

Users can effortlessly transition between sitting, perching and leaning positions, promoting movement throughout the workday and preventing the sedentary behaviors often associated with prolonged sitting.

While purchased for use at my workstation, this seating is often found in other rooms being used by my girls at their desks or in the sitting room when it is time to do their hair!

Assembly and Maintenance:

IKEA products are renowned for their user-friendly assembly instructions, and the Nilserik Standing Support is no exception.

With clear step-by-step guidance, assembly is straightforward and can be completed without specialized tools. I assembled mine myself in only a few minutes.

Furthermore, the minimalistic design facilitates easy cleaning and maintenance.

Considerations:

While the Nilserik Standing Support does offer some benefits, it’s essential to consider individual preferences and ergonomic requirements before purchasing.

Firstly, it can be used with a seated workstation as well as an adjustable workstation. I use it at the lowest height setting (51cm) when using my desk at its seated height (70cm).

Some users may find the seat less cushioned compared to traditional office chairs and the lack of a back support can be fatiguing, which could impact comfort during extended periods of use. With that in mind, I do recommend that alternative supportive seating options are available at the workstation.

I recommend trying the Nilserik out in store before purchasing, if possible.

Additionally, individuals with specific mobility issues or medical conditions should consult with a healthcare / ergonomics professional before incorporating any new ergonomic equipment into their workspace.

Conclusion:

Overall, the IKEA Nilserik Standing Support is a useful and practical addition to any sit stand workstation, offering ergonomic benefits, versatility, and ease of use. With its thoughtful design and affordable price, at €70, it provides an effective solution for people seeking to enhance their comfort and productivity while working from home. When used intermittently, the Nilserik Standing Support promotes healthy posture and movement, contributing to a more ergonomic and enjoyable work experience.

In summary, the Nilserik Standing Support from IKEA has been a useful addition to both my own workstation and our home in general.
